Enhanced Geothermal Plant Goes Live
Fervo Energy says its Cape Station plant in Utah began selling power under contract on 30 September, a day early. The company calls it the world’s first enhanced geothermal plant built on a new site to reach that point.

BEAVER COUNTY, Utah — A geothermal company called Fervo Energy said it began selling electricity from its Cape Station plant to the grid on 30 September, one day before its contractual deadline. Fervo says that makes Cape Station the first greenfield enhanced geothermal development in the world — one built from scratch on a new site — to reach commercial operation under its contracts.
Fervo synchronised the first block of the plant with the grid on 24 September and declared commercial operation six days later. Revenue is now flowing under its power-purchase agreement, the long-term contract that sets how much electricity a buyer pays for.
“No team has ever built a project like this anywhere in the world, and we did it ahead of schedule,” Fervo co-founder and chief executive Tim Latimer said in a statement.
What enhanced geothermal is
Geothermal power plants turn underground heat into electricity. Traditional geothermal plants tap heat sources close to the surface, which limits where they can be built. Fervo and other enhanced geothermal companies drill deeper, because deeper rock is hotter, which opens up more places to build, TechCrunch reported. Fervo, founded in 2017, brings drilling techniques and technology from the oil and gas industry to the job.
Fervo’s first “GeoBlock” at Cape Station is producing about 33 megawatts of net power. Phase I of the site is planned for roughly 100 megawatts across three 33-megawatt GeoBlocks. The other two Phase I blocks are still being commissioned and are due to reach contractual commercial operation by 1 January 2027. A second phase of about 400 megawatts is already under construction, with an expected commercial date in 2028. Fervo has previously said the wider site could eventually support as much as 4 gigawatts.
How fast it was built
From groundbreaking to commercial operations for the first block took 23 months. As the company applies what it learned, Latimer said, it aims to finish future blocks in as little as 18 months. TechCrunch noted that this speed, and the ability to add capacity in phases, should appeal to data-center operators hunting for new power.
Google, Southern California Edison and other buyers have agreed to take power from Cape Station, TechCrunch reported. Fervo said it has more than 1 gigawatt of binding power-purchase agreements across its portfolio.
“With over 1 gigawatt of binding PPAs signed across our portfolio, the COD of this first GeoBlock is the beginning of our build into a durable base of predictable, long-term revenue generation,” chief financial officer David Ulrey said. COD means commercial operation date, the day the plant is officially online under its contracts.
Why it matters
The company said the milestone shows enhanced geothermal can deliver reliable, around-the-clock, carbon-free electricity at commercial scale on a fast timeline, in an industry where project delays are common. The first block is performing to expectations, Fervo said.
“Every GeoBlock we bring online makes the next one faster and more predictable, and that repeatability is the foundation of how we scale and bring down costs,” said Dawn Owens, the company’s head of development and commercial markets.
What happens next
Fervo’s remaining Phase I GeoBlocks are due online by 1 January 2027. Phase II construction continues toward a 2028 commercial date. The company said it is focused on bringing the contracted capacity online and on disciplined capital spending.
