Nikola Bartůňková of the Czech Republic beat her countrywoman Karolína Muchová 6–3, 6–0 on Thursday, 8 October, in the quarter-finals of the China Open in Beijing (WTA; AFP via France 24). The China Open is one of the women's tour's WTA 1000 events, the top level below the four Grand Slam tournaments, and it is played alongside the men's event in the same city.
The 20-year-old was seeded 26th, meaning the organisers ranked her 26th among the players in the draw. Muchová, 30, was seeded seventh. She is having the most consistent season of her career, with two titles, in Doha and Bad Homburg, and a second major final, at Wimbledon (WTA).
Bartůňková needed 67 minutes, according to the WTA; AFP timed it at 66. She won both the first five games and the last seven (WTA; AFP via France 24). She broke Muchová's serve, meaning she won a game in which Muchová was serving, in the second game, with four returns in a row hit deep at Muchová's feet, each drawing a mistake. She broke again in the fourth game, helped by a drop shot, a gentle shot that lands just over the net (WTA). She led 5–0 within about 20 minutes (WTA; AFP via France 24).
Then the match tightened. A few loose forehands let Muchová win three games in a row, and Muchová saved five set points, chances that would have given Bartůňková the set, before losing it. On the sixth, Muchová's own drop shot landed too deep and Bartůňková hit it away for a winner, a shot her opponent could not reach (WTA; AFP via France 24). The WTA noted that Bartůňková had let several big leads slip this summer, including 6–2, 4–0 against Aryna Sabalenka in Berlin. This time she did not.
There was no way back for Muchová in the second set. Bartůňková again raced ahead and won it 6–0. She finished with 19 winners to Muchová's 12, while Muchová made 37 unforced errors, mistakes not forced by her opponent (WTA). The last point came when Muchová hit the ball long (AFP via France 24).
It was the third win of Bartůňková's career over a player in the world's top 10, after Belinda Bencic at the Australian Open and Sabalenka, the No. 2 seed, whom she beat 6–4, 6–3 in the third round in Beijing (WTA; AFP via France 24; ESPN). She opened her week with a 6–2, 6–2 win over Magdalena Frech, and in the fourth round she beat Sinja Kraus 6–0, 4–6, 6–3 (ESPN).
Her rise has been quick. She ended 2025 ranked 130th in the world, is 34th this week and will move into the top 30 for the first time after the tournament (WTA). This is her third semi-final on the main tour, after Guadalajara in 2025 and Monterrey this year, and her first at WTA 1000 level (WTA).
"Honestly I don't know. It was (an) unbelievable match," she said on court, and she called the win a "dream come true" (AFP via France 24). "Today I was really aggressive," she told reporters later (WTA).
The two players train at the same club in Prague, Štvanice, and this was their first meeting (WTA). Bartůňková said she follows Muchová "a lot" and has a similar style, built on drop shots and volleys, shots hit before the ball bounces (WTA). She also called Muchová "a great human being" (AFP via France 24; WTA).
She said the results had surprised her. She said practice sessions with top players such as Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff in the week before the tournament had helped her prepare. "Honestly I didn't expect these results," she said (WTA).
In the semi-final she will play Mirra Andreeva of Russia, the No. 4 seed, who beat her fellow Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova, the No. 19 seed, 7–6(4), 7–6(3) later on Thursday, winning both sets in tie-breaks, the deciding game played when a set reaches 6–6 (ESPN; Tennis.com).
What a reader can take from Thursday in Beijing is that a 20-year-old who started the year outside the top 100 has now beaten two of the tournament's top seven seeds in a week, and she did it this time without letting a big lead slip.
