Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain, the No. 2 seed, beat Hubert Hurkacz of Poland, the No. 5 seed, 6–4, 7–6(9–7) in the Chengdu Open singles final on Tuesday, 29 September, at the Sichuan International Tennis Center in Chengdu, China (Wikipedia Chengdu Open 2026; Umpiry). Chengdu is an ATP 250 hard-court event. Davidovich Fokina converted 1 of 6 break points and won all 11 service games; Hurkacz saved none of his break chances and hit 17 aces to Davidovich Fokina’s 8 (Umpiry). It is Davidovich Fokina’s second tour-level title, after Mallorca in June, and his seventh career final; he now leads Hurkacz 5–2 head-to-head. Hurkacz had reached his first ATP Tour final of the season by beating Canada’s Denis Shapovalov 6–7(8), 6–3, 6–3 in the semi-finals on Monday, 28 September; Davidovich Fokina had rallied past qualifier Nikoloz Basilashvili 4–6, 6–4, 6–3 earlier Monday (CBC Sports / Canadian Press; ATP Tour; Tennis Now).
An ATP 250 sits one tier below the Masters 1000 events on the men’s tour; hard courts are the paved acrylic surfaces used for much of the Asian swing (ATP Tour). A break point is a chance for the returner to win the server’s game; an ace is a serve the returner does not touch. A tiebreak is the first-to-seven shootout, win by two, when a set reaches six games each — here extended to 9–7 in the second-set breaker (Wikipedia Chengdu Open 2026; Umpiry).
Umpiry reported that Davidovich Fokina won 85 percent of first-serve points to Hurkacz’s 70 percent, won all 11 of his service games, and broke once for the only service break of the match, in the first set at 3–4; both players finished with two double faults (Umpiry). Wikipedia lists the eighth edition of the Chengdu Open at the Sichuan International Tennis Center from 23–29 September, with Davidovich Fokina as singles champion (Wikipedia Chengdu Open 2026). The Spaniard entered the week seeded No. 2 and ranked No. 29; Hurkacz was the No. 5 seed, ranked No. 46 (Wikipedia Chengdu Open 2026).
Monday’s semi-finals had set up the final. Hubert Hurkacz of Poland, the No. 5 seed, beat Canada’s Denis Shapovalov 6–7(8), 6–3, 6–3 to reach his first ATP Tour final of the season; he saved all three break points he faced, hit eight aces and won 85 percent of first-serve points in 2 hours 27 minutes, and leads Shapovalov 6–1 in their career meetings (CBC Sports / Canadian Press; Tennis Now). Shapovalov, the No. 7 seed from Richmond Hill, Ontario, hit 14 aces and four double faults and was chasing a second tour final of 2026 after winning Los Cabos in July (CBC Sports / Canadian Press). Tennis Now noted that Hurkacz was into his 13th career final and playing for his ninth tour-level title, his first final since Geneva in 2025 (Tennis Now).
Davidovich Fokina had gone through the Chengdu week without dropping a set before Basilashvili pushed him to three; ATP Tour reported he saved seven of nine break points, including all six in the deciding set, and rose two places to No. 27 in the live rankings by reaching the final (ATP Tour). Basilashvili, 34 and a qualifier, was bidding to become the oldest finalist in Chengdu Open history (Tennis Now). Before Tuesday, Davidovich Fokina led Hurkacz 4–2 head-to-head, including three of four prior hard-court meetings; the Chengdu title made it 5–2 (ATP Tour; Tennis Now; Umpiry). He had endured five consecutive defeats in tour finals before finally breaking through in Mallorca in June (ATP Tour).
